Suzanne Barton is an author and editor working in children’s books, scriptwriting and storytelling for impactful organisations. She’s also an emerging illustrator. She loves musicals, dreaming on riverbanks and collaborating on creative projects of all kinds – from developing cabaret shows inspired by 1940s radio drama to writing video game scripts for people with vision impairment.
Children’s books
Suzanne’s picture books include farmer’s market adventure Meeka, ode to fatherhood My Dad’s Weird Beard, and My Unicorn Farts Glitter – a tale of sibling love and farty bathtimes that has been translated into French and Spanish. Suzanne made her debut as an author-illustrator in the anthology Our Australian Heart. Suzanne has seven junior fiction novels being published 2024–25, including How to Build a Sky Garden and Mr Fuzzypants: Cyber Safety Star.
Book editing
Suzanne works with publishers and children’s book authors as a freelance editor to help make stories the best they can be. Children’s book authors can book manuscript assessments and editing any time, or enrol in the How to Write a Picture Book Mini Course, which also includes a manuscript assessment. For publishers, or authors with longer stories, please send Suzanne a message to discuss your needs.
Film, TV, theatre and beyond
As well as writing children’s books, Suzanne is a masters-qualified scriptwriter and producer. She’s worked on documentaries for the ABC and SBS, produced award-winning narrative content for non-profits, written the script for a video game for people with vision impairment, created a series of comic cabarets inspired by 1940s radio drama, and helped found a touring opera company – delivering sold-out productions. One of her big dreams is to write a story that makes it to the stage as a musical. If you’d like to collaborate, please get in touch.
Corporate communications
When she’s not pursuing creative projects, Suzanne works with purpose-led organisations to tell meaningful stories that inspire and unite. Her corporate communications experience includes strategic content creation for high-profile print and digital channels, managing and developing complex content ecosystems, and leading talented, multidisciplinary teams.
